Members of various professions are held to a high standard of care when they are offering their services to members of our community due to their specialized training and education and the nature of their work. When a professional does not follow the safety rules required of their profession and as a result a client or customer is harmed, that professional may be responsible for that harm.
Professional negligence or malpractice can include mistakes by any type of professional. When a doctor or healthcare provider commits misconduct, it is called medical malpractice. When a lawyer or paralegal commits misconduct, it is called legal malpractice. Other professionals can commit malpractice, as well, such as dentists, accountants, pastors, psychologists or counselors, and pharmacists.
